Who Is This For?
I installed the RX 9070 to see if AMD’s mid-range card could genuinely compete with the RTX 5070. It can. Here’s who this card is for:
- 1440p gamers at high settings: I was getting competitive frame rates in every AAA title I tested at max quality. No complaints.
- Budget-minded builders: with 16 GB VRAM. That’s the best memory-per-dollar in this price segment, period.
- VR players: The USB-C output plugs straight into modern VR headsets. Clean and simple.
- Power-conscious setups: 220W TDP means my 600W PSU handled the entire system with room to spare.
If you depend on CUDA for AI training, use Stable Diffusion regularly, or care a lot about ray tracing quality, the RTX 5070 is the better fit even more. I tested ray tracing in Alan Wake 2 and the NVIDIA card was noticeably smoother.
Benchmarks
| Game / Workload | RX 9070 | RTX 5070 | vs. RTX 5070 |

| Cyberpunk 2077 (1440p Ultra, Rasterization) | 95 fps | 102 fps | 93% |
| Black Myth: Wukong (1440p Max, FSR/DLSS Quality) | 88 fps | 98 fps | 90% |
| Alan Wake 2 (1440p Ultra, Ray Tracing On) | 52 fps | 72 fps | 72% |
| Time Spy | 21,200 | 22,800 | 93% |

Power and Thermals
The 220W TDP makes the RX 9070 the most efficient card in its price bracket, and I felt the difference. A quality 600W PSU is all you need for a full system build. The reference cooler held steady at 67 degrees C under gaming load, which is notably cooler than both the RTX 5070 (72 degrees C) and RTX 5070 Ti (75 degrees C) in my testing. Lower heat also means quieter fans. I could barely hear this card during normal gaming sessions.
The Bottom Line
I think the RX 9070 is the best pure-value mid-range GPU you can buy right now. You get 16 GB of VRAM, a 256-bit memory bus, and 1440p rasterization performance within spitting distance of the RTX 5070, all. Where it falls short is ray tracing and AI workloads. NVIDIA’s hardware and software stack still wins there by a clear margin. But if you’re building a gaming PC and every dollar counts, the RX 9070 earned my recommendation.
