Overview
I bought the Vivobook 16 because I wanted to see if the bigger, brighter display was worth it over the HP Pavilion 15 and Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5. It is. At the specs are identical to the competition, but the 16-inch 300-nit screen makes a real difference in daily use. More screen space, less eye strain. That matters when you’re staring at a laptop all day.
Performance
The Ryzen 5 7530U with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM handles everyday work without issue. I ran a dozen Chrome tabs, Office docs, video calls, and media streaming without any slowdowns. The DDR4 is a generation behind the LPDDR5 in the IdeaPad Slim 5, which means slower memory bandwidth on paper. In my daily use? I couldn’t tell the difference for productivity tasks.
The 512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD delivers fast boot times and snappy app launches. Nothing surprising here, but it works well.
Display
The 16-inch 1920x1200 IPS panel is the reason I’d pick this laptop. The 16:10 aspect ratio gives me more vertical space than a standard 1080p panel. I noticed it immediately when scrolling documents and working in spreadsheets. At 300 nits, it’s clearly brighter than the Pavilion 15’s dim 250-nit display. I could use it comfortably near a window without cranking to max brightness.
Color accuracy is adequate for general work. Roughly 65% sRGB, so photo editors and designers should look elsewhere. But for everyday use, the screen looks clean and pleasant.
Build and Design
ASUS borrowed visual cues from its premium OLED lineup, so the Vivobook 16 looks cleaner and more modern than most budget laptops. That said, the chassis is all plastic, and I can feel it. There’s flex in the keyboard deck, and the lid bends under light pressure. At 3.97 lbs, it’s heavier than I expected, a consequence of that larger 16-inch panel.
The keyboard is comfortable with decent key travel. The trackpad is responsive and well-sized. Port selection is practical: USB-C, two USB-A ports, HDMI, and a microSD slot. I wish they’d included a full-size SD reader, but at this price, I’m not shocked they didn’t.
The Bottom Line
The Vivobook 16 earns its place in the budget conversation because of that display. The 300-nit brightness and 16:10 aspect ratio make daily use more pleasant than the dimmer, smaller screens on competing laptops. The trade-offs are familiar: plastic build, DDR4 RAM, and a battery that gets me through most of a workday but not all of it. If screen size and brightness are your priority at this price, I’d buy this one.
