Overview
The MSI Raider 18 HX is unapologetically large. I set it on my desk next to a 16-inch gaming laptop and the difference was immediately obvious. The 18-inch display, 64 GB of RAM, and RTX 5080 at full 150W TGP make it a desktop replacement that happens to fold shut. If you want the biggest screen and the most power in a laptop chassis, this is it. I stopped using my desktop monitor during testing.
Display
The 18-inch QHD+ (2560x1600) IPS panel at 240Hz is the Raider’s defining feature. The extra screen real estate compared to 16-inch laptops is immediately noticeable, and it surprised me how much it mattered. Games feel more immersive. Multitasking with side-by-side windows is comfortable without squinting. Color accuracy is good at 95% DCI-P3 with 350-nit brightness.
Performance
The RTX 5080 Laptop at 150W TGP is running at its maximum power limit, which puts it ahead of the same GPU in thinner laptops that cap out at 100 to 120W. Paired with the Core Ultra 9 285HX and 64 GB of DDR5, there’s no bottleneck anywhere. I threw everything at it.
In games, I got 100-plus fps at QHD+ in most AAA titles with max settings. Competitive shooters hit the 240Hz limit easily. The panel and GPU are perfectly matched, and I could feel the difference in fast-paced games.
Thermals and Noise
MSI’s Cooler Boost 5 system with multiple fans and heat pipes keeps the CPU and GPU from throttling. But the trade-off is noise. Under full gaming load, fan noise hit 50-plus dBA. I measured it. You will want headphones. During quiet office work, the fans calm down, but under load, this laptop sounds like it means business.
Build
At 6.83 lbs plus the charger, the Raider 18 HX lives on a desk. I moved it between rooms a few times and didn’t enjoy it. The chassis is thick and sturdy though. The per-key RGB keyboard has satisfying key travel, and the large trackpad works well. MSI’s build quality is good. No creaks, no flex. It’s not luxury, but it’s solid.
Battery
The 99.9 Wh battery (FAA maximum) lasted 5 to 6 hours for productivity and under 2 hours of gaming. That’s expected for the hardware inside. Keep the 330W charger within reach. This is a desk machine with a battery for emergencies.
